Famous Fido sets sights on a new home
The animal rescue business is changing, and Famous Fido Rescue wants to change with it. But it’s going to be costly.
The venerable no-kill facility and adoption center has done about all it can from its current home at 5430 N. Clark St. in Chicago. It’s time to look forward.
“We’ve gone way beyond rescuing animals,” says Famous Fido founder Gloria Lissner. “And I’m trying to figure what’s beyond spaying and neutering. That’s a good thing, but people are dropping more animals off, they get no counseling, and the animals get sick or pass away.
“I’ve been doing this a long time, but it’s gut wrenching. The people who have the dogs and cats and animals don’t know about animals. They might have a kid and the kid is bitten and the animal is thrown into a shelter. A shelter should be a haven for dogs and cats that finds them homes, not necessarily kill them.”
Her solution is a new location, at 3124 W. Irving Park, where Famous Fido can expand its programs and help more animals.
The new building would have a larger meet-and-greet area, grooming center, positive training area, outdoor/indoor play space and counseling center to work with the public to help them re-home their animals or find an alternative to placing dogs or cats in a shelter.
“We help animals in crisis, animals that are going to be thrown into the street. The new space will be a haven for our rescue,” says Lissner, who currently has 25 dogs in her care and who is known for taking in special needs animals, such as bonded pairs, seniors or dogs not considered adoptable. “The new space will offer programs, seminars and campaigns for the community.”
But getting the new building outfitted and running is going to cost an estimated $200,000. And time is of the essence.
“We can’t stay here much longer. When the landlord finds someone to rent this space, we’ll have 30 days.”
Famous Fido is currently going through the zoning process. There’s a hearing in August, and if all goes well they hope to be in the new place in September, assuming its fundraising efforts pay off.
“We need donations, corporate sponsors that might help us with building supplies,” she says. “We need to get this space together in a very short time.”

Clark St. Proceeds from the 7:30 p.m. showing will go to Famous Fido.
